It was a sad day yesterday and I could really feel the hurt of my family members…

Psalm 30:5

Today I am breaking from my normal devotions.  Yesterday, my cousin and her fiance lost a child to cancer.  My cousin is very strong and ‘gets back up’ pretty easily, but you can tell from talking to her and her posts that this has hurt her like nothing else.  So I Googled verses about death.

There are a lot of good verses about it, but none of them really jumped out at me as a “GOOD verse” for someone who is grieving.  So I kept searching.  Then one verse hit me!

“…weeping may be for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” – Psalm 30:5

Growing up in church I knew a lot of the other verses and they all give hope.  You can hear the usual rhetoric almost audibly in your head about how the deceased aren’t in pain anymore, and they are in a better place; which is all true I believe, but not as comforting as you might think.  But this verse… just jumped out at me.  It tells me that it’s OK to weep… because we are acknowledging that we experienced a great loss; but that we will have joy again!

If you’re reading this, please say a prayer for comfort for my cousin and her fiance.  Even though the weeping may only be for a night, it doesn’t make that pain any easier while they wait for their joy in the morning.
